“Aquino is a world class liar”, this was the reaction of the indigenous youth under the Kabataan para sa Tribung Pilipino (KATRIBU) on Aquino’s statement at the Asia-Europe Meeting Manila Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management that he is “trying to climate-proof our path to progress”
According to Reagan De Vela, spokesperson of KATRIBU, “Aquino’s action and policy were far from what his pronouncements in the said conference. From our point of view the statement he delivers during the conference is nothing but sweet empty talks designed to convince international leaders that the government under his watch is doing something positive regarding the climate change and disaster mitigation”
“How can Aquino climate-proof the Philippines economic progress if his main economic thrust is based on large scale destruction of the environment such as mining, legal logging and coal projects and large scale destructive dam. Aquino’s development plan is nothing but a”tuwid na daan” towards disasters.
“Since Aquino took the helm of the country’s leadership, he has approved and renewed 182 mining applications or 25 percent of the existing 712 approved mining applications. He has also approved 17 coal-fired power projects.” De vela explain.
Mindanao’s experience with typhoon Pablo (international name Bopha) showed that the disastrous impacts of large scale mining and legal logging have doubled if not tripled that left thousands homeless and devastated.
He added that “Aquino may have pulled the legs of the international community in saying that we have “set a new standard” between disaster and disaster response but he cannot fool the people in the disaster affected areas such as the eastern Visayas and southern Mindanao regions. “ As we have seen in the government response to Typhoon Yolanda, the only record he has set was how fast his government and his minions can blame other people for his inutility and ineptness.” De vela further explain.
If Aquino is sincere in “climate proofing” the country’s growth, all he need to do is to reverse his environmentally destructive projects. Scrap the current mining policy that only brought nothing but destruction to our fragile economy. Tighten the sanctions against those who have done environmental damage such as the Philex, Lepanto, Marcopper and Lafayette Mining Corp. He should stop his useless rhetoric in protecting the environment and invest more time and resources in developing environmentally safe energy sources.
